At time of death Robert was 46Y 10M 21D. Cause of death was a gun shot through the chin and into his shoulder. The shooter was his cousin, Hugh H. Hardwick. Their dispute was over the "pens provided for pigs". The two men did not want their pigs to be intermingled. Originally, Robert was given permission to build pens for his pigs (on property owned by his sister's husband). Hugh did not want fencing erected so he tore down the fencing Robert had installed. An argument took place and Hugh went into his house and came back to the scene with his gun and used it on Robert. Robert didn't die immediately. He lingered overnight. A trial was held at the Fairfield County Courthouse in Lancaster, Ohio, and Hugh was found guilty of the crime and was sentenced to the Ohio Penitentiary for a couple of years.
