Chauncy Phillip Lang was born May 29, 1894 in Woodsfield, Ohio to Louis Phillip and Sarah Clarissa "Clara" (Dyer) Lang. He graduated from High School in 1913. He taught briefly before entering Ohio State University and graduated in 1919. He was Commissioned as a 2nd Lt., U.S. Army and served with the American Expeditionary Forces during WW-I. Following the War he developed classes in agriculture for military personnel in France.
On May 30, 1918 he married Catherine Elizabeth Schrock. They raised three daughters; Catherine (Kay), Barbara and Phyllis.
He taught Vocational Agriculture in Brookville, Ohio, from 1919 to '23, St. Clairsville 1923 to '28, and the next year in West Lafayette. During those years Chauncey and his wife Catherine were 4-H leaders at the first 4-H camp in Ohio.
In 1928 he accepted a position as Assistant 4-H leader at Penn State University. Later he was appointed as the State 4-H Leader. He held that position until he retired in 1959. While at Penn State he organized the first Senior 4-H Club in the state. For 22 years he was in charge of the older youth programs. Starting in 1948 he was responsible for Pennsylvania's International 4-H Youth Exchange to war torn countries after WW II. He guided 4-H to become a vital part the annual Farm Show in Harrisburg.
He had several activities that he enjoyed; hunting, golf, and calling square dances. He found this was a way he could meet many people; and he enjoyed the company he met.
He was elected as Mayor of State College, PA; serving from 1966 -1974. He was appointed to the State College Board of Adjustment. He was a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi, Extension Professors Association, Kiwanis, Sons of the American Revolution, the American Legion, and St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church.
