After the death of his father in 1938 George increasingly worked longer hours at the family business, Farris Quality Ice Cream. When George was about 18 years of age in 1939 he met Betty Neal-Hart at a roadhouse in the small coal mining city of Marmet, WV located about 15 miles south-southeast of Charleston. He was wearing a plaid suit and a pork-pie hat when he offered to buy her a drink. She replied that she would instead prefer a candy bar. Nine years later she was to become the mother of his firstborn, George Paul, Jr.

Swept along by the winds of war George enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 06 Oct 1942, and shortly thereafter, in a show of support for her country and her boyfriend Betty enlisted in the first group of the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) enabling them to see one another in New York, Philadelphia, Bethesda, and Washington — where George would sleep on the hard benches in the DC train station — which he nicknamed "Hotel Union Station."

Discharged on 06 Jan 1946, George utilized his GI Bill during the period of 1946-47, to attend Chicago Technical College in order to better prepare himself for the management of Quality Ice Cream. While there he and Betty went to see headliners like Danny Thomas and Martha Raye. Newspaper reports show their marriage on 14 Feb 1948 in Chicago. Regrettably, his relationship with Betty deteriorated, most likely because of her alcoholism, which led to the termination of their relationship.

Upon his return to Charleston George increasingly assumed more of the managerial duties of Quality Ice Cream from his elder sister Josephine until 1949, they were co-managers. He met and married Lois Jean Harkins, a '46 graduate of Morris Harvey College in Charleston with whom he had four children: Jean Anne (1950), Mary 'Melissa' (1952), Karen Sue (1955), and Joseph Gregory (1957).

By 1971 urban renewal took the site of Quality Ice Cream and George opened a Ben Franklin Variety Store before taking a civil service job with West Virginia. He attended Sacred Heart Parish, now Co-Cathedral, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
