Mrs. Dora Bishop, 88 years old, of Neelys Landing, died at a Cape Girardeau hospital at 1:15 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.
She was the widow of the late Rev. William A. Bishop and is possibly the last Civil War widow of the county. Her husband had been a veteran of the war 100 years ago and his death was 35 years ago. They were married Feb. 9, 1988.
Mrs. Bishop was born Feb. 1, 1874 at Neelys Landing and was a daughter of James Ackman and Sarah Welty Ackman.
Mrs. Bishop spent her life in the Neelys community, and for 35 years lived with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew McClard. The Rev. Bishop had been pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Archie L. Bishop, of Jackson, four daughters, Mrs. Minnie Walker, of Grafton, Ill., Mrs. Esther Buback and Mrs. Leo Schmidt of St. Louis, and Mrs. McClard. A sister is Mrs. Lillie Craft of Whitewater, and there are 22 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren and 8 step grandchildren. Two sons and two daughters preceded her in death.
A prayer service will be held at the Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home at 12:30 Friday and at 2 the service will be hald at New Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. Leroy Moon and the Rev. Glenn Cummings will be in charge. Burial is to be in the church cemetery.
