James was the second child and eldest son of Thaddeus and Salome Dikeman Andrus. He married Sarah A. Carle on 3 DEC 1845 in Widow Carle's home in Barton, Tioga Co. NY, Barton had been home to James since his family moved there from Danbury CT when he was about 14. Sarah was born to Aaron and Susannah Ogden Carle. in 1820 in Barton. She died 30 MAR 1885 in Alpine, Kent Co MI where she and James had been living when he signed up for Civil War service. James was 5' 6", had blue eyes, black hair and a fair complexion. He had been a lumberman.
James Andrus enlisted in Co.H, 6th Michigan Cavalry as a Corporal on 17 SEP 1862 at Grand Rapids, Mich. He was promoted to Sergeant. He died in Jarvis General Hospital in Baltimore MD after his surgery to repair a gunshot wound that he received on 29 AUG 1864 during action at Smithfield, Va. A mimi ball had entered his right arm shattering the humorous into splinters, the mini-ball then traveled to his spine in the thorasic area and lodged there. He had a secondary hemorrhage and a prolapsed artery which then caused an aneurysm .He was 43yr 10 mo and 7 da when he died.
