Fort Dodge Messenger-Word has been received of the death of a former Fort Dodge resident, Mrs. Mabel Frances Bowen of Long Beach, CA, on August 23, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Isaac N. Page, in Long Beach, following a heart attack. Funeral rites for Mrs. Bowen were held on August 26 at Mottell's funeral chapel in Long Beach. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Glendale. Mrs. Bowen, born at Cherokee, made her home for many years in Fort Dodge. Thirteen years ago the family moved to California. While in Fort Dodge, Mrs. Bowen was affiliated with the First Congregational church, the U. S. W. V. auxiliary and Alden-woman's circle of the First Congregational church.

Philip Henry Bowen, age 27, son of Philip and Nora (O'Connell) Bowen married Mabel Smiley, age 18, daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Metcalf) Smiley at Sacred Heart Church on August 1, 1901. Pastor Edmund Heelan officiated.

Surviving her are four daughters, Gail, Mrs. Isaac Page of Long Beach, Bonita, Mrs. Chester Edwards of Humboldt, IA, Margaret Mrs. Edward Fisher and Betty, Mrs. Otto Boll, both of Long Beach. A sister, Mrs. Alice Craiglaw of Long Beach, three brothers, Clarence Smiley of Long Beach, Bert L. Smiley of Los Angeles, and Harold Smiley of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren also survive. Her husband, Philip H. Bowen, a daughter, Helen Bowen, and one granddaughter preceded her in death.

Mrs. Mabel Frances Bowen, of 3001 Daisy Ave., died Sunday at home. A native of Cherokee, Iowa, she came here 13 years ago. She was a member of First Congregational Church and Alden group of the church. She also belonged to Long Beach Auxiliary 71, United Spanish War Veterans.

The 1940 US census shows Philip (65) and Mabel (56) and daughter Betty Bowen (20) living with in-laws Sam Craigow (72) and Alice Craigow (Mabel's sister) (56) in Long Beach, California.

Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. Margaret Fisher, Gail Page and Mrs. Betty J. Boll, all of Long Beach, and Mrs. Bonita Edwards, a sister, Mrs. Alice M. Cariglow of Long Beach; brothers, Clarence M. Smiley of Long Beach, and Bert L. and Harold R. Smiley. Services will be Wednesday with interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale.
