Later, after working in St. Louis, MO, he enlisted in the Union infantry (3 mos.) and upon mustering-out in October, 1861 enlisted in the 2nd MO Light Artillery serving until his mustering-out in October, 1863. Returning to St. Louis he worked as a "Turner" until his death. Theresa was the beneficiary of his Army pension from 1890 until her death.
Besides the three German-born children, the couple had :
Charles J. Sr. (1862-1920), Henry (1863-1935) Mary (Stahl,1868-1940),Sophia(Anderson, 1866-1892).
The 1870 Census lists Laura, b. 1863, Charlotte, b.1858 and Maria, born 1861. These last 3 may be in error as there are no further records although in 1900 Theresa lists "9 children, 4 living".
The 2 boys worked independently as "Carpenters & Stair-Makers". Henry (#54875944), and Lena Ellinghaus (1865-1935) with 5 boys, produced most of the St. Louis Almstedts. Charles J. Sr.(#52278976) and Sarah Dwyer (1866-1929) had 2 boys, 5 girls.
