Effie, the daughter of John Allen Marquis and Frances Marrah Willis, was living in Grand Island, Nebraska when she met Henry Bartels. They were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island on January 15, 1921 (the witnesses were listed as Mr. and Mrs. Hermann Koch; Mrs. Koch was Martha, nee Bartels..Henry's sister). Effie and Henry lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he worked on the railroad, and then transferred to Alhambra, California. They had one son, Roderick. At death, Effie was survived by her son and four grandchildren.
