|Birth: ||Jun. 5, 1833, Germany|
Ernst Heinrich Gottlieb Bartels was born June 5, 1833 at #9 Meerbeck, Schaumburg-Lippe in Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), Germany. He was the second of two children born to Hans Hinrich Fridrich Christian and Engel Marie (Laue) Bartels. His older brother, "Fred" inherited #9 Meerbeck, and Henry was left to be a day laborer (""Tagelöhner") for a land owner. This was a secure position, being passed down through generations and came with a small cottage on the land and enough space to have a little livestock, but it effectively kept him from ever having enough money to purchase and own his own land. On April 26, 1861 he married Engel Marie Ernestine Krömer of #33 Meerbeck. They had two children: son Wilhelm (born 14 Feb 1862) and daughter Engel Marie Karolina "Lena" (born 1 Sep 1865). In 1869 his brother Fred sold #9 Meerbeck and immigrated to America. According to Schaumburg Studien #4160 (a series of volumes outlining people who left Schaumburg), Henry and his family followed Fred on March 23, 1870. Fred settled in Illinois and stayed there for 10 years before coming to Nebraska (he and his wife Sophie are buried at Old Zion Cemetery in Saline County, Nebraska), and this is where Henry settled also.
In Illinois, Henry and Engel had three more children: Wilhelm Henry in 1871, Wilhelmina in August 1874 (she died May 2, 1882) and Heinrich George. Henry and Engel followed brother Fred and moved to Saline county, Nebraska. The two younger children were confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church of which his brother Fred was a co-founder and charter member.
As the years passed, his children grew up, married, and moved away. His oldest son, Fred, married Ida Guse Bartels (the widow of his cousin Ernst Bartels) and moved to Thayer county; Lena married August Bartels and moved to Jerauld county, South Dakota; William married Louise Schwabauer and moved to Lyman county, South Dakota; and Henry married Ora Spencer and moved to Lyman county, South Dakota.
Henry's wife, Engel, was killed in a house fire in 1892; her burial site is not known.
