Richard E. Abel Sr.

TERRE HAUTE — Richard E. Abel Sr., 88, of Terre Haute, passed away on Jan. 11, 2011, in his residence. Richard was born May 3, 1922, in Terre Haute, to Guy Abel and Llewellyn Neal Abel.
Richard had served in the United States Army Air Corps and was a staff sergeant for the 15th Air Force Mediterranean Theater. Richard was a World War II ball turret gunner in a B-24 and was also a former P.O.W. Richard had been employed at Pfizer as a crew leader in the Recovery Department. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 and was very involved in the local Democratic Party, serving as a former precinct vice committeeman. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting. He liked to work crossword puzzles and listen to polka music. He was a quiet, quick-witted man who was an excellent father and family man. His children were very proud to call him Dad.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dora May Houston Abel, whom he married Jan. 7, 1967; sons, Richard E. Abel, Jr. of Terre Haute, Paul Abel and his wife Marilyn of Shelburn and Greg Abel and his wife Marilyn of Farmersburg; daughters, Gena Hargrave Buchanan and her husband LTC Steven Buchanan of Marble, N.C., Marty Hargrave Collins and her husband Daniel of Lebanon, Ohio and Amy Abel Inserra, P.A. of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Brandy Lee Hicks, Kenny Hedden, David Hedden, Tony Hedden, Sarah Abel Southwood, Derick Baranowski, Dr. Terra Baranowski Haxton and her husband Tim, Casey Collins, Aerin Collins, Brian Collins, Maggie Inserra, Brandon Freeman, Hannah Inserra Bennett and her husband Nick, Mary Inserra, and Tobias Inserra; great-grandchildren, Brandon Edward II, Devon, Emma and Lillian Rose. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William and Vaughn Abel; and one sister, Loretta Heramb.
