November 1993: On a visit to Talihina, Oklahoma, the writer (Wanda Blackwell) visited with Golden and Madge Blackwell. Golden was born 1912 in Hayden, Missouri, and was the grandson of James Blackwell born. He (Golden) talked about Mertie; said they "ate a lot of fish, and he remembered Mertie (on one occasion) saying "she didn't like that ole Catfish". Golden also remembered the time that Mertie was struck and killed by lightening.

1916: "The Dixon Pilot, Pulaski Co, Dixon, MO Frliday, 22 September 1916"; Uncle John Bull came in from Springfield Thursday to attend the funeral of his granddaughter, Miss Myrtie Bull, of Dry Creek who was killed by lightning Wednesday.

1916: "The Dixon Pilot, Pulaski Co, Dixon, MO Friday, 22 September 1916"; LIGHTNING KILLS GIRL - Myrtie, the 14-year old daughter of Johnnie Bull of the Dry Creek neighborhood in Maries County, while milking a cow at the home of THOMAS ROBERSON, where she was visiting, during an electrical storm last Wednesday was killed by a bolt of lightning that struck a street nearby. She was struck at 5 o'clock and died two hours later. Henry Minz, who happened to be there at the time, was also knocked down by the lightning and is said to be in a serious condition. Mrs. Roberson was also severely stunned by the bolt that killed Miss Bull. Miss Bull was a cousin of Lum Blackwell of this City.
