THE PARIS NEWS, Friday, April 6, 1956, p. 10: “Mrs. J. W. Abels, 80, hospitalized here the past eight years because of arthritis, died at 10:55 a.m. Friday. The former Miss Fannie Hammond of Pattonville, she and Mr. Abels, whose 63rd wedding anniversary occurred last month, moved to Paris from Blossom in 1949. She was the mother of J. W. Abels, Jr., of Paris, and of Mrs. Fred Wemple, Midland. Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of arrangements for services, which were incomplete.”
THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, April 8, 1956, p. 7: “The funeral of Mrs. J. W. Abels, 80, formerly a resident of Blossom 48 years, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Fry-Gibbs chapel here, with internment in Knights of Honor Cemetery at Blossom. The Rev. Robert Metzer of Oak Cliff, former Methodist pastor at Blossom; the present pastor, the Rev. R. Ragan, and the Rev. Crowley Bridges of Seventh Street Baptist Church here, will officiate. Mrs. Abels died Friday morning in the Paris hospital where she been the past eight years, suffering from arthritis. The former Miss Fannie Hammond, daughter of the late N. J. and Sallie (Lewis) Hammond, she was born April 22, 1874, at Pattonville. She was married at home there March 7, 1893, she and Mr. Abels living at Pattonville until moving to Blossom. Since 1948, her husband had made his home here with their son, J. W. Abels and wife, at 1318 Clarksville St. Mrs. Abels had been a Methodist since childhood. Besides her husband and her son here, she leaves a daughter, Mrs. Fred Wemple, Midland; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. M. L. King, Paris, and Mrs. A. D. Smith, Blososom.”

THE PARIS NEWS, Monday, April 9, 1956, p. 2: “Abels Burial. Last rites for Mrs. J. W. Abels, 80, former Blossom resident, were held Sunday at Fry-Gibbs chapel here, and interment was made in Knights of Honor Cemetery at Blossom. Pallbearers were Ted Wemple, Hank Avery, Holley Abels, Jimmy Dunagan, Ed Abels, Albert Cunningham, Allen Wemple and Abe McCrum. Mrs. Abels died Friday in a hospital here after being an invalid eight years.”
