Bertha was the 5th daughter born to G. Wilhelm Grauf and Louisa Gauf a farming family living in Monroe, Michigan. Her mother died of Consumption when Bertha was only 5 years old. In 1904 she married Cassimer William Knab a farmer and together they had 2 children, Viola Rose and Howard.
