John Alfred Abbott, Sr., superintendent of the Hagerstown Division of The Western Maryland Railway for 15 years, died at Washington County Hospital, Tuesday evening at 9:45, after an illness of four days. He was 66. Mrs. Abbott died Feb. 1, 1953.
Mr. Abbott became supertendent here May 16, 1937 and served until his retirement September 1, 1951. He was succeeded be E. E. Welsh.
Before coming to Hagerstown, Mr. Abbott served as superintendent of the Elkins Division of the Western Maryland from June 25, 1934 until he came to Hagerstown. Mr Abbott started his career in railroading on November 23, 1904 as a telegraph operator with the West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railroad.
Mr. Abbott was born and reared in Everett, Pa., the son of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Abbott. He was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Hagerstown; Ohr A. F. and A. M. No. 131, Salem Chapter, No. 18, Antioch Commandery, No.6, Knights Templar, AAONMS, Ali Ghan Temple, Royal Order of Jesters, BPO Elks No. 63 and Queen Esther Chapter, Order Eastern Star, all of Cumberland.
He is survived by sons, John A. Abbott, Jr. and James L. Abbott, both of Hagerstown; sisters Mrs. Arley Keirn, Clarksburg, W.V., and Mrs. Harry Hobson, Roanoke, Va.; two grandchildren.
The body was removed to Suter Funeral Home and will be taken to the residence Wednesday evening where friends may call until Friday noon. It will then be taken to St. Paul's Methodist Church and lie in state until 3 o'clock when services will be conducted by the Rev. J. E. Kemp Horn; interment in Rest Haven Cemetery.
