He died unexpectedly while swimming with his family, suddenly collapsing in shallow water at a nearby beach side resort, possibly due to a stroke or heart attack. He was especially beloved and his loss was grieved enormously by friends and family.
He was the son of James Wandesford Butler, 1st Marquess of Ormonde and Grace Louisa Staples. He married Frances Jane Paget, daughter of General Hon. Sir Edward Paget, GCB and Lady Harriet Legge, on 19 September 1843.
