Mrs. Gladys Silver Buchanan, age 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the home of her daughter Gail in Marion. A native of Yancey County, she was born on August 30, 1916 to the late Grayson Silver and Florence Murphy Silver. Gladys was the oldest living member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church at the time of her death. She retired from Drexel Furniture Company. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her life, and she was their inspiration. Her husband of 63 years, Roy Allen Buchanan, and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Jean Buchanan preceded her in death.
Left to remember her are three children, Fred Buchanan and his wife Myrtle of Lenoir, Bill Buchanan of Marion and Gail Hall and her husband Gene of Marion; a brother, Rev. Dr. J. Howard Silver and his wife Mona of Burlington; three grandchildren, Allen Hall, Susan Heavner and Freddie Buchanan; three step-grandchildren, Brenda Worley and Terry and Jeff Moore; and four great grandchildren, Christopher and Cayla Ollis, Brooke Buchanan and Andrea Hall.

A service in celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with the Revs. Dr. J. Howard Silver and Douglas Prevette officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in McDowell Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice of McDowell County at 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC 28752, or to the Cross Memorial Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Fund at PO Box 1127, Marion, NC 28752.
