Mrs Matilda Opal (Gardner) Bates, 70, widow of John E Bates, died at 12:20 a.m. Thursday at the Wabash Valley sanitarium, after an extended illness. Born at Monroe, most of her life was spent in Tippecanoe county.
September 27, 1884 she married Mr Bates, who died several years ago. She attended Stockwell academy, and was a member of the U B church and Ross chapter, O E S at Delphi, she was also formerly a War Mother. Surviving are four daughters,
Mrs Jess Parvis, West Lafayette, with whom she made her home; Mrs Otto Schnider, city;
Mrs N P Baumgartner, South Bend, and
Mrs Kenneth Sandbach, Plainfield,
two sons:
-E L Bates Indianapolis, and
-John H Bates, Brookston;
a brother, William B Gardiner, Monticello, and a sister, Mrs Joseph Timmons, Frankfort. The body was removed to the Hippensteel and Funkhouser funeral home, where fiends may call after 2 p.m. Friday, and where services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. burial in Clarks Hill cemetery.
