"Funeral services for John R. Hocking, 81, of Riverside, Calif., were held Friday, September 12, at 10 a.m. in the Achenson and Graham chapel at Riverside. He was the father of Kenneth Hocking of Perryton (TX) and he and Mrs. Hocking attended the services. Burial was in Olivewood cemetery. A retired farmer and orange grower, Mr. Hocking died Monday evening, September 8, in Chapman Convalesant Home at Riverside following a lengthy illness. He had been an active and hard working man until July, 1965, when ill health forced him to retire. He entered the Chapman Convalesant Home at that time. Mr. Hocking was a former Booker resident, having purchased the I. E. Stender farm 3 1/2 miles northwest of Booker and moving there in 1924 with his family from Catesby, Okla. In 1927 he rented out the farm and moved to Riverside to become an orange grower. He was born May 11, 1888, in Friend, Neb. He married Josephine Morris February 15, 1911, and after 19 years of marriage, Mrs. Hocking died July 5, 1930. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Riverside, and was described by his family as a "kind and loving dad and grandad." He is survived by two sons and one daughter. These are John M. Hocking and his wife Dellaurs, of Riverside, and their sons, Dennis of the home and John Ray of Booker; Kenneth and his wife, Ruby, of Perryton and their daughters Janice and Denise, and Mrs. Parris Hurst and her husband of Escondido, Calif., and their children, Kenneth, Mrs. Don Broyles and Mrs. Roger Peckenpaugh, all of Escondido. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Grace Richards of San Diego, and three brothers, Will of Nebraska, Orville of Norwalk, Calif., and Harry of Riverside. He was preceded in death by his wife, one grandson and two brothers and three sisters. The Hocking family would prefer all memorials be made to the Booker and Perryton Methodist Church Abiding Memorial Funds."
