Jack Cunningham, 76, of Oblong passed away Monday, September 23, 2013 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. He was born January 29, 1937 in Hammond, Indiana, the son of Cecil and Doris (Rowe) Cunningham. Jack was an undeniable presence no matter what he was doing. He ran a barber shop for a number of years, and sold barber shop supplies. He also ran a grocery store in Oblong as well as the Oblong Oracle for a time. Jack also worked at the First National Bank of Oblong and the First Robinson Savings Bank where he planned Travel Trips. He also worked as a part-time Oblong Police Officer for 14 years, a part-time jailor for 14 years, and also volunteered for the Oblong Fire Department. When Victor Dana opened their doors, he was the first employee hired locally, and he continued working there for 22 years. He belonged to both the Masonic Lodge and to the Crawford County Shriners, the latter with whom he took on the part of "Patches" in their Crazy Clown Unit. He was a member of the Crawford County Fair Board and was the first president of the Oblong Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was well known as the announcer for Oblong football games for 23 years. Most importantly, Brother Jack received his call to the ministry in 1971. He pastored several churches, most recently being at South Union in rural Flat Rock for the last 9 years. He married Jackie Gilbert, and she survives. He is also survived by his sons & daughters-in-law, Joe & Kristy Cunningham of Robinson and Jerry & Ann Cunningham of Kirkwood, MO; his grandchildren, Kyle, Sam, Clare, Julia and Grace Cunningham, Kelsey Sutfin, Virginia & Scott Glowski; great-grandchildren, Patrick and Mark Brencick, Andrea and Mike Dunphy, Gray and Brooke Dunphy and Jane Sutfin. He is also survived by nieces DiAnn Helvig and Judy Culp, as well as several great-nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister & brother-in-law Shirley & Chuck Tuel, and father-in-law & mother-in-law, Nathan and Mildred Gilbert. Jack enjoyed his family and his grandchildren most in life. He also supported and followed every child in his church and followed them in their activities as well. Even though he was a die hard "Blue & Gold" Oblong guy, he did support his grandchildren in Robinson sports by wearing Maroon & White. Also he traveled as often as possible to see his granddaughters in St. Louis in all their activities. Jack also enjoyed planning trips for the bank, and all the traveling partners he and Jackie came to love. His true calling in his Ministry seemed to be to those in the hospital. His dedication to visit every person in need was never a burden. He had a heart for helping those in need and was a true servant to his Lord and Savior. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 27th at the South Union Church in rural Flat Rock with Ron Price, Eric Hawkins and Keith Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, rural Oblong. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 26th from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Robinson Relay for Life. Envelopes will be made available at the funeral home and church.
