John G. Andrews, age 90, of Columbus, and formerly a life-long resident of Cambridge, Ohio, passed away on April 27, 2014 at the Kobacker House in Columbus.
John was born November 1, 1923 in Cambridge, Ohio to the late George and Wadea Andrews, and was married to his beloved wife Madeleine for 64 years. He was a graduate and valedictorian of Staunton Military Academy.
In 1942, while attending Harvard University, his father suffered a heart attack making it necessary for John to return to Cambridge to manage his father's National Hotel business. In 1943, he entered the United States Army and served for three years, which included serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations on the island of Okinawa, Japan. Upon his return from the service, John attended Babson College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in finance and accounting.
In 1952, he and his wife Madeleine built the Andrews Motel on U.S. Route 40, just west of Cambridge. In 1965, he organized the Guernsey Regional Planning Commission and was named its first chairman. That same year he purchased land at State Route 209 in Cambridge and later developed the Travelodge Motel, which he and Madeleine successfully owned and operated until 1985, at which time they were awarded the motel chain's highest honor, the Operator of the Year Award.
John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cambridge where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and also as a member of its Investment Committee. He was a long-time member of the Masonic Blue Lodge #62, was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite mason, and was a member of the Aladdin Temple Shrine. In addition, he was a member of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, the Elks club, the VFW, and the Cambridge Country Club. He excelled at and held a great passion for flying as well as the game of tennis.
John is preceded in death by his wife Madeleine. He is survived by and will be sadly missed by daughters, Gloria (Jack) Joseph, Kay (Alan) Drake, Jeannie (Ted Nicol) Andrews, and Diane Andrews; sister, Mary (Richard) Malmer; grandchildren, Michael Joseph, Tegan Drake, David Drake, Matthew (Megan) Nicol, John Nicol, Tony Donato, and Kristen Donato; great-grandsons, Liam Hamilton- Drake and Kullen Andrew Drake; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a sister Georgette Hajjar, grandsons Christopher Nicol and Robert Nicol.
