In 1942, while attending Harvard University, his father suffered a heart attack making it necessary for John to return to Cambridge to manage his father's National Hotel business. Upon his return from the service, John attended Babson College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in finance and accounting.

That same year he purchased land at State Route 209 in Cambridge and later developed the Travelodge Motel, which he and Madeleine successfully owned and operated until 1985, at which time they were awarded the motel chain's highest honor, the Operator of the Year Award.

John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cambridge where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and also as a member of its Investment Committee. He was a long-time member of the Masonic Blue Lodge #62, was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite mason, and was a member of the Aladdin Temple Shrine.
