James Benjamin is a brother of the late Charles Mitchell Alexander of Bishopville, Lee County, South Carolina, and a son of Confederate soldier Benjamin Alexander of Darlington County, South Carolina, who lost his life due to the War Between the States. Benjamin died at home. James' mother was Luisa Elizabeth Reynolds Alexander, who later married a Mr. McCaskill.

At one point, J.B. lived in the Carter's Crossing community of Darlington County. He reportedly helped his brother, Charles Mitchell Alexander take care of his aunt and uncle, the Thomas Hollands, in their later years. They are also said to have been blind during those years. Mrs. Holland is the former Mary Ann Myriam Alexander, a daughter of Rev. Abner M. Alexander and wife Massey Belk Alexander. She is buried close to James.
