Sinclair Agnew Adam, Sr.
Sinclair Agnew Adam Sr., an architect, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at his home in West Chester of apparent heart failure while working in his garden. He was 91.
His wife, sons and their wives, daughter, and grandchildren all deeply mourn his loss.
Sinclair A. Adam was born in Nutley, N.J., on Dec. 7, 1914, and moved with his family to West Chester in 1926.
His father and mother raised five boys in their West Chester home on South New Street. Sinclair was the third son of John Niel McLeod Adam and Anna Louise Wylie Clarkson Adam.
He is preceded in death by brothers: John Niel McLeod, James Davidson and William Louis.
He is survived by his brother George Edwin, of Texas.
Sinclair A. Adam attended Augusta Military Academy in Virginia and graduated from Penn State University in 1936. He also studied at the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) and the University of Chicago.
He practiced landscape architecture in Massachusetts for several years and then went to Greenland in 1939 to work as a civilian engineer on the construction of airbases and deep-water ports during the Second World War.
When this work was completed, he went to the South Pacific as a Lieutenant in the Navy Seabees.
After the war, Sinclair Adam practiced architecture in Korea, Japan, Canada and the United States.
He set up his own practice in Hartford, Conn., in 1959, and practiced for six years before returning to West Chester. His firm worked on many projects, including schools and churches.
In West Chester, Sinclair served the community in many capacities: through the Brandywine Valley Association, the Rotary Club of West Chester, The Boy Scouts of America, The St. Andrews Society of Philadelphia and The First Presbyterian Church.
Sinclair A. Adam served on the Westtown Township Planning Commission for 26 years, during which time he worked to provide reasonable and sustainable development, which would enhance the community, and preserve as much of the land and environment as could be done.
His architectural firm, Adam Associates, worked for the West Chester Area School District, Bala Plaza and on projects in Plymouth Meeting, as well as the local community. First Presbyterian Church of West Chester and Brandywine Valley Association Headquarters were beneficiaries of his work, as well as many private firms and individuals.
Sinclair was an avid and knowledgeable gardener. He grew tree fruit, small fruits and vegetables in retirement at his West Chester home.
He was a kind and patient man who had a considerable interest in history, politics and his fellow man. He was known in the community for his vision, patience and kindly humor.
He loved sailing, skiing, camping, hiking and swimming in his younger days. In his later years he devoted his attentions to his community, his family and his gardens, where he will be missed indeed.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service at 11 a.m., Monday, June 26, at the First Presbyterian Church, Miner and Darlington streets, West Chester.
His visitation will be Monday, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
Interment will be at 2 p.m. at Birmingham Lafayette Cemetery, West Chester.
