John's mother, Mariah Wegley Beck died in 1828 in Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Isaac and Catherine Wegley of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.
In 1829 John with his father, Adam Beck and family left Pennsylvania and moved to Jefferson Township, Crawford County, Ohio where they cleared land for farming, near Leesville. John was raised on this farm, and received a common school education. He was a brother of eight siblings: Catherine, Jacob, Adam, Leonard, Mary, Susanna, Isaac, and Daniel.
On 07 May 1833, he married Eliza Swisher in Crawford County, Ohio. They were the parents of six sons: William, Isaac, Andrew J., Adam, Samuel S., and Hezekiah.
After Eliza's death in Febuary, 1852, John married Eliza Rhodes on 02 September 1852 at Seneca, Ohio. They were the parents of nine children: Mary C., Margaret A., John F., Autobine, Joseph R., Nancy E., Laura J., Lucinda H., and Louisa A.
John owned 160 acres of farm land that he had worked to improve. He was also a carpenter for many years. He and his wife were members of the United Brethern Church. He was listed as a Republican.
