Merle A. Battiste, Ph.D.,76, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday August 8th. He was born July 22nd, 1933 in Mobile, AL to David Theodore and Flossie (Older) Battiste. He graduated from Murphy High; The Citadel with a BS; LSU, Baton Rouge, with a MS (Prof. J. G. Traynham) and then obtained a Ph.D. in chemistry from Columbia University (1st Ph.D. Student of Ronald Breslow) in 1959. He was a professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Florida for 42 years, and is remembered as a dedicated, passionate teacher and consummate scientist. Merle developed close relationships with many of his students and was often a mentor well into their careers, including 2003 Nobel Laureate Robert H. Grubbs. He published over 130 peer reviewed papers in Organic Chemistry. The University of Florida created the Battiste Award in Synthetic Chemistry in 2003. Merle was a member of the Gainesville Camellia Society for many years, and was often happiest outside working in the yard. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother Flossie, father David Theodore, and brother Marion. He is survived by his wife Jan, brother James Melvin Battiste (Mildred), sister Marie Wilson, children Mark, John, Tanya, Paula, Tracey, grandchildren Alex, Audrey, Michael, Blakely, Cass and Thomas and many other relatives whose lives he touched.. A memorial service will be held Thursday Aug 13th at Forest Meadows Funeral Home, 725 NW 23rd Ave, Gainesville, FL at 2 PM. A funeral service will be at 11:00AM Saturday August 15 at the Mobile Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Mobile, AL. Memorials can be directed to the American Diabetes Association . A descendant of Charles Long, a minister who was born in Ohio September 24, 1804 and died in Mobile, Alabama April 14, 1882. Charles moved from Woolmarket in Harrison County, Mississippi in 1854 to West Mobile County, Alabama.
