Emma Elizabeth Lucas was the daughter of John Lucas and Nancy Ann Studebaker, one of five sisters of the five Studebaker brothers of wagon and automotive renown in South Bend, Indiana. It is said that the ever-literate Emma met her future husband in Monroe, Michigan while attending the Young Ladies' Seminary and Collegiate Institute, also known as Boyd's Seminary after it's founder. In 1877, Emma became the second wife of Benjamin Dansard, Jr. and mother of the younger of his two sons, Benjamin Dansard, III. She also helped raise her stepson Boyez Dansard born to her husband's first wife Ella Paxson, who died in 1875. Emma's remains were interred in the Dansard vault in Woodland Cemetery, Monroe, Michigan.
