Belpre Man Dies In Bridge Crash
Owen Alexander Killed Instantly
Parkersburg's second traffic fatality of the year to date occurred at 2:47 a.m. today when a one-car accident on the 5th St. bridge took the life of 36 - year - old Owen Dean Alexander of 226 Florence St., Belpre, O.
The victim apparently died almost instantly from head and internal injuries and his car was demolished.
Investigating City Patrolmen F.J. Lowers and R.E. Dever reported Alexander, traveling alone, was en route south across the Little Kanawha River span, and as he passed the approach curve on the north side his 1957 model Oldsmobile four-door sedan crossed over the center line, to the left, and smashed into a steel girder beside the pedestrian walkway.
The impact was so great, the officers reported, that the entire front of the car was embedded into the girder.
United Ambulance Service too sic the victim to the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The crash hurled the motor completely out of the car, the patrolmen said, and a wrecker first hauled the demolished vehicle away and then returned to pick up the engine.
He was born in Vienna, W.Va., Aug. 17, 1930, son of Roy and Laura Lemon Alexander and spent most of his life in Belpre, O. He was a member of the Vienna Nazarene Church.
He was a member of the Marietta American Legion and Post 1212 Parkersburg VFW and of the Iron Workers Union.
Survivors include his wife Cora Belle Alexander,; two sons, Michael and Samuel and a daughter, Gale, all at home, a brother, Bernard Alexander, Belpre; two sisters, Mrs. Gordon Inghram, Vienna, and Mrs. George Wulfurt, Marietta, and his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. at the Spencer Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Taylor of Vienna, and Rev. Ernest Kieffer of Belpre officiating. Burial will be in the Rockland Cemetery in Belpre.
