Birth: Oct. 3, 1842
Wayne County
Indiana, USA
Death: Jan. 29, 1906
Des Moines
Polk County
Iowa, USA

Matilda L. Burgess was born in Wayne Co. Ind, Oct 3, 1842 and died Jan 29, 1906 aged 63 years 3 month and 26 days.
She was married to Silas Allen the present mayor of Ankeny Mar. 17, 1875, in LaPorte Co. Ind, where they remained one year, they then went to Minnesota, where they spent 5 years. They then returned to Iowa, and for the last 16 years they have resided in or near Ankeny.
On her mother's side, Sister Allen was of Quaker parentage, thus she inherited birthright membership in the Friends Church, but when she grew to girlhood, or young womanhood, feeling doubtless her need for a new birth from above, she gave her heart to God and joined the United Brethren Church.
At the time of her decease she was a member of the Womans Relief Corps, of Des Moines, and of the Rebekah degree of the I.O.O.F. at Ankeny.
For several months she had been in declining health, and during the autumn months she failed rapidly. On Dec 2nd she was taken to the Methodist Hospital at Des Moines where she under went an operation with the hope of obtaining relief and for a time there were encouraging symptoms. But the tired pain racked body, so wasted by disease became weaker, and weaker, until at the end of eight weeks spent in the hospital relief came. She fell on sleep, and was not, for God called and the Spirit took its flight. From a house where the sick and suffering are gathered together together, she went to the home where these things have no place.
There are left to mourn her departure, two brothers, four sisters, an only son, Lawrence C. Allen and the bereaved husband and a step-son, F. A. Allen, besides many other relatives and old friends.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Boyd and Steele, at the M. E. Church here and interment took place at the Oralabor cemetery.
