Oscar was married to a woman named Sadie Straub about whom little is known. They had two children who died in Walla Walla WA at very young ages: Ora (1884-86) and Earl or Carl (1888-1890). Oscar was working in the lumber industry in Washington State in the 1880's. After the death of the two children, per Oscar's pension records, he and Sadie divorced. He was apparently close to his younger brothers Eli and Henry, as well as his sister Adeline. Eli was an attorney who represented Oscar in his quest for a Civil War pension; Henry apparently moved to Tacoma WA in 1900 to assist his brother; and Adeline was Oscar's contact person when he was residing in various Homes for Civil War Volunteers.
Oscar enlisted twice during the Civil War. He was Private, later Corporal. His first enlistment was with Company A, 139th Illinois Infantry. He reinlisted on 13 February 1865 in Company F of the 151st Illinois Infantry. He was mustered out on 24 June 1865 in Columbus GA.
