Son of Edward Cassidy Barben & Nannie Elma Smyers.


Edward S. Barben, 88, of 509 N. 10th St., passed away at 7:40 a.m. Thursday May 26, 2011 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.He was born Nov. 15, 1922, in J.C. Blair Hospital, Huntingdon, the son of the late Edward C. and Nannie (Smyers) Barben.He was a 1940 graduate of Mount Union High School and a 1944 graduate of Penn State University.Edward was a veteran of World War II and served with the 33rd Division in the Pacific Theater, attaining the rank of first lieutenant.He operated a family farm for several years and was farm manager at the Hollidaysburg State Hospital and the Selinsgrove Center, until the state farms were closed. He worked for the Department of Agriculture at the regional office in Williamsport and at the time of his retirement was acting director of the Meat Animal Evaluation Center at Penn State. Following his retirement, he worked for J Kleinbauer, Selinsgrove.Edward was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Selinsgrove.He was an avid Penn State fan and a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association. He was also a member of American Legion Post 945, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6631, Selinsgrove. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his dog, Lily.Edward was married to the former Charlotte J. Townsley on Nov. 12, 1949. To this union four children were born. Edward also had nine grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove, with the funeral following at 11 with the Rev. Dr. Dietmar Plajer officiating.Burial with military honors will be in Germany Valley Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Huntingdon County.The family will provide flowers. Contributions in Edward's memory may be made to Disabled American Veterans, 4219 Trindle Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
