Hazel B. Amidon, 79, rural Mondovi, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Rocky Knoll Health Care Center, Plymouth.
She was born March 18, 1923, in Lincold Township, Buffalo County, to Arthur Albert William Bielefeldt (born Aug. 5, 1896, son of John Bielfeldt and Marie (Voss) and Nona Eliza Johnson (born July 24, 1896, daughter of Nellie Veddar, adopted at age 3 by John C. Johnson and Sarah Arneson). She was baptized at Urban Church near Rutschow' Cheese Facotry.
She married Lew Elverton Amidon (born Dec. 1, 1896, son of Verdie and Ida Amidon) on May 24, 1947, in Mondovi. He died June 8, 1969.
She wrote poetry and compiled local histories. Her specialty was writing anniversary poems or poems for special occasions, family events, etc. She loved history and worked with the local historical society. She was a 4-H project leader for many years, working with the Happy Go Lucky 4-H Club. She had many hobbies over the years including stamps, coins, salt and pepper shakers, kerosene lamps, scrapbooking, and quilting. She liked the changing seasons, especially fall with the changing of leaf colors.
She attended Buffalo County Normal School plus additional course work through UW Extension, Madison,and various night courses. She taught schol before marriage, and for a short tme after, then became a full time at-home mom, domestic engineer and farmer's wife.
In later years, with failing eyesight and health, she still loved music and car rides. Her favorite junk food included bacon cheeseburgers and onion rings. She always made jello with fruit. For the children, she pressed boiled potatoes through a "ricer" so they came out like spaghetti and were nicknamed "wormy" potatoes.
Four weeks ago Monday she moved to Rocky Knoll, north of Plymouth in Sheboygan County. During the 5-hour trip, she discussed favorite quilt patterns, friends, neighbors and relatives, and of course grandchildren. One of her final wishes was to spend more time with famiy. She had four weeks with the great-grandchildren. A couple of weeks ago she attended her last sing-along with granddaughter Ramona and sang every song and all the verses.
Survivors include a daughter Sibyl (Wulff) Schoenweitz of Eden; son, Morris Amidon (special friend Lynn Anderson) of rural Mondovi; four grandchildren, Ramona (Ron) Wisdorf of Keil, Steven and Mark Schoenweitz, both of Eden, and Mary Jo Thompson of North Fond du Lac; Thee great-grandchildren, Zackery and Logan Thompson and Kellie Ncole Walsdorf.
She was preceded in death by her husband; step-brother Norman Nyre; step-sister Marion Johnson.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thusday, Oct. 24 at Our Savior's United Methodist Church, Mondovi. Rev. Ron Stelzleni officiated.
Burial will was in the Amidon family lot in the Gilmanton Cemetery.
