Jacob was born in Bas-Rhin in the Alsace, where his family went with other Amish when they were expelled from Steffisberg in Bern Canton, Switzerland. The family next moved to Barbelsteinerhof in the German Palatinate, where Jacob married a woman about 1733 who many sources think was Elizabeth Mishler. She bore him 5 children and they immigrated to Philadelphia on the "Brotherhood" in 1750 and settled on a farm in what became Bern Township in Berks County. Jacob died in 1764 and was probably buried in the Amish Burial Ground on Bishop Jacob Hertzler's Farm.
