Born 7 Dec 1834 to James and Anne Patterson Armstrong. Moved to Arkansas in the mid-1850s where he married Malissa Amanda Meeks in Arkansas Co., AR, on 6 Oct 1857.
Abraham C. Armstrong was a veteran of the Civil War, a private in the 9th Arkansas Infantry, known as the "Parson's Regiment" because of the high number of clergymen (42) who were members of the regiment, includin gthe commander and ranking officers. He participated in the Battle of Shiloh, and was wounded at the Battle of Corinth when struck in the upper abdomen by a spent grapeshot while charging the enemy breastworks. His Civil War muster records have been obtained, showing that he was enlisted in Company F (Drew County Dixie Guards), 9th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, on july 21, 1861. His injury was described in his own handwriting in his application for a Civil War Veteran's pension which was never paid, probably because his description of his unit said it was a Tennessee unit. After the war, A. C. and Malissa had seven children and were living in Lincoln Co., AR in 1880. Malissa died c1883; it is not known where she is buried. A. C. returned to TN, settling in McNairy Co. He then married Malinda Aramenda Mitchell on 29 Dec 1886. They had three children together; Malinda had a daughter from a previous relationship.
A. C.'s pension app also contained the results of his physical examination by a doctor which indicated he had a mass of scar tissue in his upper abdomen from which he continued to suffer. He continued to take pain medication for the rest of his life, whether from habit or actual need it's hard to say, perhaps a combination of both.
