A scholarly collector of Beatrix Potter drawings and marvellous code breaker of "The Journal Of Beatrix Potter" without which almost nothing would be known about her fascinating and important early life. Although by profession an engineer, the loose pages of her cypher-written journal was handed to him in 1952 to hopefully solve but it was not until he was on the point of giving up on Easter Monday, 1958 when he almost by chance was able to at last break this code and read for the very first time the journal. It was brilliantly transcribed and published in 1966 and is Leslie Linder's masterpiece.
After his death Leslie Linder's very substantial collection of Beatrix Potter memorabilia was bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Cremated, Location of ashes is unknown.
