Andrew L "Andy" Andrews, 87, of Newport, New Hampshire, formerly of Peabody, Massachusetts, passed away at New London Hospital on Thursday, March 20, after a brief illness.

Born in Newport, New Hampshire, May 27, 1926, son of Leonidas Andrew Skinas and Anna (Contogeorge) Andrews deceased. Attended Towle High School in Newport, NH; served in the U.S. Army in the Phillippines during World War II; and graduated from Boston University in 1954.

Married 57 years to the right woman, Pauline (Polly) Hilton Andrews from Anson, ME. Career newspaper man, first at the Pioneer Times of Houlton, ME, then at the Rochester Courier of Rochester, NH, and then lengthy tenures at the Boston Traveler, Boston Herald Traveler, and the Boston Globe. Past director and treasurer of the Peabody, MA, Historical Society. Active in the Newport, NH chapter of the American Legion, participant in the Newport Historical Society, and past treasurer of the Newport Senior Center. Editor of various publications of local interest, including “A Peek At Newport, N.H. 1842-1843,” proceeds from the sale of which helped fund his pet project, the rebuilding of the Corbin Covered Bridge in 1994.

Survived by his wife, his sister Claire (Michael) Karavetsos of Saugus, MA, his daughters, Andrea and her husband Dale Mirth of Fredonia, NY; Athena and her husband Phillip Rodbell of Bala Cynwyd, PA; Alicia and her husband Mark Schmidt of Marblehead, MA; and Elizabeth and her husband Michael Moscone of East Hampstead, NH; by eight grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband Srinivas Gainedy, Allison Schmidt, Janie Cantell Orne, Anna Cantell, Sophia and Phoebe Rodbell, Cassandra and Michaela Moscone; two great grandchildren, Christopher and Abigail Orne, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He cherished his many friends in Newport and the camaraderie they shared.

He was predeceased by his Aunt Alice and Uncle Peter Kallelis, Saugus MA; Brothers John and wife Violet Andrews, St. George Island, FL; Charles and wife Irene (surviving) Andrews, Lynn, MA; and sister Irene and husband Michael Kallelis, Wolfboro, NH.

A celebration of Andy’s long and productive life will be on Saturday, March 29, 2014, beginning at 1:00 pm, Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Newport, NH. Burial with military honors in North Newport Cemetery.

Following the services, the family would like you to join them in celebration of his life at the Newport Senior Center, 76 S Main St, Newport, NH 03773, 603-863-3177.

In lieu of flowers, suggested donations may be made to the Newport Senior Center or The Brewester-Gould-Lee-Rollins Post 25, American Legion, Newport, NH.
