Alex or Aleck Blount was born a slave in 1842 (year per dc) – quite possibly he was first owned by a Robert Huntley and purchased by John Blount (Note: researchers may wish to obtain a copy of John Blount's will, Union County, 1856: "I give to my wife, if she desires it, the use or service of a yellow Boy, a slave that I bought of Robert S. Huntley by the name of Alexr. or Ellick, now about five years of age…" – this may or may not be the same Alex Blount given that the birth year is a ways off from what the dc has).

He was listed as a R.R. [Railroad] hand on the 1880 Union County, NC census viewed at Ancestry in March 2014; farmer on his death certificate seen here. With him in 1880 (ages in parenthesis) was wife Martha (24), William (aka "Will", age 10), Edward (9), Mary (6), and son Virgilius (aka "Virgil", age 1).

Per The Monroe Journal, Aug. 21, 1942, in an article for the Diamond Jubilee for Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Zion church, Alex Blount was one of the charter members along with Jerry Coppage, Stone Stewart, Hattie Stockton, Martha Blount, and Flora Helms.

Looking at the Union County North Carolina Marriage Records, 1843-1899 (abstracts by Frances Small) there are two marriage records believed to be Alex Blount: 1.) Alex Blount, s/o Nat Rattey & Marry Rattey to Usery Houston, d/o Lem & ?, on Nov. 16, 1867; 2.) Alexander Blount, s/o Nat Rattle & Mary Rattle, to Martha Helms, d/o Trott & Ann, on June 19, 1869.

In the next marriage book (1900-1915) there are two other children with marriage records; born after the 1880 census, these are shown as sons of Alex and Martha: Mark, b. c1893, marrying Carrie Trull on 9-15-1913 and Henry, b. c1891, marrying Ola Horn on 3-24-1909. Both Mark & Henry are on the 1900 Union County, NC census with Alex & Martha (Alex listed as a farmer) and also a 9-year old daughter whose name looked like "Rona" (Rena/Lorena).

There are several grave markers with little or no inscription on them at/near Mark Blount's [at least one seen in image posted here at memorial] – it is possible that these belong to Alex and/or Martha Blount. –pmp, Union County Public Library.
