Chris Black was born 5 September 1870 in Gallatin, Tennessee to Alfred H. Black (1831-1913) and Martha Black (1844-1878). He lived in Los Angeles, CA in 1900. He married Mary Annabelle Queen (1882-1950) on 26 April 1908 in Phoenix, and lived in the Wilson district of Maricopa County, AZ for the remainder of his life. Sometime before 1930, they adopted two brothers as sons, Robert Ernest (Stowe) Black (1915-1990) and John Dwight (Stowe) Black (1917-2009), who were the eldest of four sons of Hiram Reuben Stowe (1888-1956) and Annabelle Fish Stowe (1890-1954). Chris died 30 December 1944 in Phoenix at the age of 74 and was interred at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery.

PIONEER RANCHER TAKEN BY DEATH
The thinning ranks of Arizona pioneers were depleted further Friday, December 29, 1944 with the death of Chris C. Black, a rancher in the valley for 47 years, who died at his home, 1046 North 24th Street, after an extended illness.
Black, a native of Tennessee, came to the valley in 1897 and engaged in vegetable farming. He had farmed in the vicinity of Phoenix until retiring several years ago, due to ill health, and took up residence on North 24th Street.
Widely known in agricultural circles, Black was an active member of the Central Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Annabelle; two sons, Robert, of Phoenix, and John, serving with the army engineers in France; a brother, the Rev. Charles C. Black, Elmira, California, and a half-brother, David Black, of Phoenix.
Funeral services have been set tentatively for Tuesday, January 2, 1945. The Rev. Dr. Charles S. Kendall will officiate. Announcements will be made by the Merryman Funeral Home.
