Lizzie and her sisters, Ida and Alberta were brought to the South Union Shakers and left there by family. Lizzie with her sisters first appeared in a January census, as members of the West family. Lizzie was 12 years old at that time. Their father "Rome Simmons" appeared twice in about a weeks time, taking Alberta first home to Pembroke, Ky. and again for Ida and Elizabeth as recorded on a 9 Oct 1889 journal notation. They had been with the Shakers barely 8 months, but were now needed at home to care for an infant that was motherless after Rome's wife had passed away. there is no record of 18 year old Ida returning to South Union, however 11 year old Alberta did return for a few months, only to be taken away again in December of 1890 by her father.

Lizzie was shown to have been readmitted to South Union 14 July 1890, remaining there 30 years and until the order was disbanded in 1922. It was noted in journal entries that Lizzie did visit her family in Pembroke in 1900, and continued her kitchen work in the Trustee's Office.

Lizzie Simmons and William Bates each received $ 10,000.00 each to start a new life as the village was being closed. They were married and live out their lives in near-by Auburn Logan County, Ky. They are buried in the Auburn Cemetery.
