Sarah was the fifth of nine children of Owen and Elizabeth (Thomas) Thomas. She was born in Pittsburgh and lived there her entire life.

Sarah married John L. Brown in 1895 and they had twelve children: Robert John, Helen Elizabeth, Lois Erma, Lida May, Thomas Ralph, Russell Sheppard, Margaret, Harold Dewitt, Ruth Jeanne, Norman, Dorothy and Elizabeth.
