Joe Rogers was the first child born to John Calhoun and Lura Rogers [probably in Duarte] in Los Angeles Co, CA. In the 1910 US Census they were living in San Fernando, Los Angeles Co., CA. He was "all boy" and grew into a "man's man" as they say. Loved fishing and hunting all his life. We have pictures of him up in the King's Canyon on horseback with a group of men fishing. He moved with his family to Tulare and eventually to Kern Co outside what is now Wasco near Bakersfield.
He married Thelma Stokes in 1920. They lived with his family on the farm for a few years. They moved out to the oil Company housing south of Taft where he was working. He bought a house in the Highland Park area of Bakersfield where they raised their girls. They moved in the early mid-1940s to Long Beach. They had two daughters. He worked in the oilfields and continued in that work or related industries until he retired from the City of Long Beach in the late 1960s. In his later years he would fly to Baja to fish for the big game fish: marlin, swordfish, etc. When he retired they bought a place in Atascadero, San Luis Obispo Co., east along the river. There he had a large garden and grew the giant pumpkins for which he was famous for miles around. They had three grandchildren and one great-grandchild at his death. His health declined rapidly the last couple of years. He had been a Mason and was given a Masonic funeral. He was cremated and the ashes scattered over the ocean off the coast of San Luis Obispo County. At the time of his death Joe was survived by his wife Thelma, and daughters, Helen and Homer "Sparky" Cowan of Long Beach, CA; Bonnie and Lindy Poole of Atascadero, CA; two grandsons; 1 granddaughter; and 1 great-grandson. One brother Howard E. Rogers and several nieces and nephews.
