Phyllis Sloan Allen 4/14/1908 ~ 2/5/2006 Phyllis Sloan Allen passed away on February 5, 2006. She was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, on April 14, 1908, to John Sloan and Grace Kearl Sloan. After attending the University of Utah, she went on to earn her BA degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She then worked in the field of interior design in Salt Lake City and in Sacramento, California, until she married Mark Knight Allen on January 18, 1934, in the Salt Lake Temple. The couple had four children and spent most of their married life in Provo. They traveled extensively. With their family they spent a year in the Middle East, where Mark had a Fulbright professorship at the University of Ankara, Turkey. Phyllis taught at BYU in the Department of Interior Design where she also served as the chairman. She planned and directed a tour to France and England for Interior Design students. In 1972 she was awarded the Attingham Grant to study in England with a group of international designers and professionals in the decorative arts. She is the author of three best-selling texts on interior design. She was a long-time member of Literary League, Silver Slipper, and BYU Women. An active member of the LDS church, residing in the Provo 13th ward for over 50 years, she taught in all of the auxiliaries, served on the Relief Society and Primary stake boards, and wrote lessons for the Relief Society magazine. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her four children: Barbara Sloan Allen, Provo; Mary Allen Redd (Robert), Provo; James Sloan Allen (Liza), Honolulu and Philadelphia; Grace Jean Allen, Provo; three brothers: Max K. Sloan, William K. Sloan, and Gilbert K. Sloan; two sisters: Emma S. Fath and Jean S. Sprague; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 10, 2006 at 1 p.m. in the Provo Peak Second Ward Chapel, 965 N. Locust Lane. Friends may call Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center Street, Provo, and Friday morning at the church from 12-1, before the services. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. -
