ALIFF, Ward Insley, 76, of Roanoke, died Thursday, May 18, 2000. He served his country during World War II as a navigator in the United States Navy. He retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad with 40 years of service and was one of the few remaining steam locomotive engineers, operating the 611 on its last run. Ward was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Norma Wilburn Aliff; a daughter, Lisa Lynn Aliff; one grandson, Langley Hawkins; two sisters, Aline A. Wells of Norton and Margaret Basham of Roanoke; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2000 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Cotton Hill Road, with President Roger L. Bohon and Bishop Steve Garrett officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel.
