Samuel McReynolds was born to Joseph McReynolds (1762 - 1840) and Henrietta Browning (1755 – 1831) in Caswell Co., NC. Samuel's father was a Revolutionary War veteran who had received a land grant in Posey County, IN in 1823. In 1827, Samuel, who had been living in that area with his family since 1817, bought the land in Smith Township from his Father. In 1828 he promptly deeded land from his farm to be used as a meeting place and cemetery, which became known as Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Sometime around 1810, Samuel was stricken with crippling arthritis, which greatly affected the rest of his life. He had to use crutches to walk. However, he did not let that slow him down. He was one of the first educated men in that area of Indiana, and at one time was a teacher. He later served as an Associate Judge of Posey County. Records show that Samuel spent part of his time in adjoining Vanderburgh County as well. He apparently worked hard all of his life. In the 1850 census at age 66, he was listed as a merchant in Center Township. He died two years later at the age of 68.

Throughout it all, Samuel appears to have remained firm in his faith. One family researcher, who visited his gravesite and carefully cleaned the eroded tombstone, stated that these words were written on his gravestone:

He made profession of religion in 1800
and lived the life of a Christian.

Samuel McReynolds and his wife, Milbrey Dement, had at least 8 known children: Matilda, William Hodges, Samuel Davis, Joseph, Nelson, Alexander, Robert, and Nancy.
