He was a member of the armed forces during the First World War, serving overseas for two years. Many of the Abbott family have served their country. Harvey's father was a Civil War Veteran, one brother served in the Spanish-American War and five of his nephews are serving in the present World War.
Harvey received his schooling in Alexandria. He was married to Elizabeth Shaver in 1922 and she lived for only eight months after their marriage.
He is survived by four sisters: Mrs Grace Rider of Alexandria, Mrs. Maude Hansen of Glenwood, Mrs. J. C. Yager of Alexandria and Mrs. Elsie Knapp of New York State. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 9, at 2 p.m. from the Anderson Funeral Home with A. A. Secord officiating. Interment was made in Kinkead Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ed Ormseth, Fred Foslien, Oscar England, L. A. Rose, N. Nash and Emil Henning. Color bearers were Worth Bundy and Lawrence Nelson. Color guards were Harry Long and Fred Schaffran. Firing squad included Ernie Haskins, Dave Jones, Percy Reese, E. Evenson, Donald Erickson, Jack Glenn and Eugene Mullen. Bugler was Carl Ekman Jr. "City Foursquare" and "In the Garden" were sung as duets by Milton Johnson and Mrs. T. J. Ulm.
