Lee Adkins, 84; WWII Army veteran
Funeral services for Lee Adkins, 84, of Fairland will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 27 at the Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Chapel of Freeman Family Funeral Homes, Shelbyville, 819 South Harrison St., Shelbyville, with burial in Fairland Cemetery. He died Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Beech Grove Meadows, Beech Grove.
He was born Jan. 10, 1924 in Crawford County. He married Thelma M. Crecelius on Aug. 3, 1946 in Franklin. He was a factory worker and retired from Chrysler Corporation Electrical Plant on Shadeland Avenue. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 1226, and formerly worked for Admiral in Shelbyville. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in England and France. He was a member of the American Legion Post 276 in Beech Grove.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma M. Crecelius Adkins; sons, Wayne E. Adkins and wife, Anita, Indianapolis, James S. Adkins and wife, Julie, Fairland, and R. Dale Adkins and wife, Runea, Indianapolis; daughters, Wanda E. Wheeler and husband, Roger, Indianapolis, Sandra L. Murphy, Connersville, Jane A. York and husband, Richard, Shelbyville, and Roxy D. Eldridge and husband, Tony, Shelbyville; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brother, Shirley Adkins, Indianapolis; and sisters, Betty Dawson, Wanda Jones, and Ferrell Adkins, all of New Albany.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Edward James and Hazel Adkins; brothers Everett, Russell and Virgil; and sisters, Cathern, Mable, Opal and Mayme.
Visitation was held at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, May 26.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer's Association or Sloan Kettering Foundation.
