Arvids was born in Sarkanmuiza,Latvia,the son of Emilija and Andrejs Klavins. He attended the University of Latvia, Riga. From there he remained a lifelong member of the fraternity Talavija. After fleeing the communist invasion of Latvia in 1945, he was in Germany, England, and Sweden before immigrating to the United States in 1950. He lived in Massachusetts for a number of years, working in the fishing industry, before moving to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1974 he married the former Betty Sue Murphy who was born in Penderlea, North Carolina, adopting her daughter Sharon on December 10, 1976.
