Samuel's wife, Mercy Pickett, the daughter of Ruth Brewster and John Pickett, was the great-granddaughter of William and Mary Brewster of the Mayflower.

Samuel is the ancestor of most of the Fosdicks in America. In 1675 he was "impressed" (drafted) in connection with the King Phillip's War.

He served as a corporal in Captain Mosley's famous Company of Volunteers.

He was a blacksmith and later a shipwright.

He was appointed Lieutenant in one of the two Foot Companies of the first French and Indian War.

He was later referred to as Captain and served in the Governor's Council in Hartford to discuss the defense of New London against the French.
