Birth: Jun. 10, 1836
Rockingham County
Virginia, USA
Death: Sep. 20, 1911
Livingston County
Illinois, USA

She was my great, great grandmother on my father's side.

Born in Virginia, and lived there until shortly after the Civil War. She and her sister drove a distance of 850 miles with a team of horses and a wagon, and came to Illinois.

The Union Army had burned their barns and destroyed their crops, by taking burning embers from their fireplace and sprinkling them on the dry hay. They decided to leave Virginia, and come to Illinois. They came to the Cullom, Illinois area, where they had other relatives living.

The Union troops were returning in 1865 and Martha married George Appel, a soldier who originally came from Germany, and had been drafted into the Union Army. They married October 31, 1865.

They had 4 children, Elizabeth, Mary Catherine, Lewis, and Rebecca. Rebecca died young, and Mary Catherine never married. Lewis married late in life and had no children, and Elizabeth married young and had 12 children.
Martha's obituary:

Gospel Herald - Volume IV, Number 27 - October 5, 1911, p. 431, 4332

"Appel. - Martha (Harshbarger) Appel was born June 10, 1836, near Dayton, Rockingham Co., Va.,; died Sept. 20, 1911; aged 75 y. 3 m. 10 d. In 1865 she came to Livingston Co., Ill., and kept house for her father. On Oct. 31, 1865, she was married to George Appel. To this union were born 3 daughters and 1 son. Her husband and 1 daughter preceded her to the spirit world. Two daughters and 1 son, and 11 grandchildren are left to mourn her departure. She is the last of a family of 7, one of whom preceded her about 1 month. She was a member of the Mennonite Church for nearly 40 years. She was much concerned about the welfare of the church and always concerned to have her children to live true to their God and perform their duties. She was sick only a few days. Funeral services were held at the Cullom Mennonite Church Sept. 21, by A. H. Leaman and s. Honderich. Text, I Pet. 1:4. May God richly bless the family in the hour of bereavement."
