On July 9, 1827 Johannes married Anna Dorothea Meyer in Zurich. They became the parents of six children: Anna Maria, Johann Jacob, Johannes (John), Johannes Heinrich (Henry), Anna Elisabetha, and Anna Pauline. In 1854 Johannes and members of his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His son John was the first of the family to immigrate to Utah in 1855. Next was his eldest daughter Anna Maria Dorothea in 1856. Henry came in 1862. Following his wife's death in 1858, at age 58, Johannes following her dying wishes by marrying her sister, Anna Magdalena; he then wound up his family affairs and proceeded toward "Zion." However, he died in Lehi shortly after arriving in Utah in 1865; and before being able to connect with his family in Southern Utah. He was age of 62. His son Johann Jacob and daughters Anna Elisabeth and Anna Pauline remained in Switzerland.
