"The LaFayette Sun" - September 4, 1912:
Tragedy Near New Harmony.
Eugene P. Corley, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Corley, of Waverly Route 4, met a tragic death Tuesday night, August 27th. Reports have it that Mr. Corley in company with a number of other young men were at the home of Mr. Ben C. Campbell, of Waverly Route 4, when a Negro living near by called them to aid in getting a man out of the house in which the Negro lived. They responded and as they approached the door of the Negro house they were fired upon with a shot gun. The load of shot grazed the clothing of one member of the party and entered the abdomen of Eugene Corley, killing him almost instantly.
It is reported that a young man living in the community fired the fatal shot and that a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
