Merrill was the eldest of 3 children born to Jesse Merrill Pouncey (1879-1934) and Sarah Irma Magee (1882-1969) in Gonzales County, Texas. She did much of the parenting of baby brother Temple, born when she was 9, because of her mother's illnesses. She graduated from Sul Ross State College, Alpine, Texas, and was a teacher and librarian in Beaumont, Texas, before marrying Paschal Reese Combs (1891-1965) in San Antonio, Texas in 1933. They had no children. Merrill lived in Miami, Fla., until Reese's death, then soon moved to an Episcopal home in Alhambra.
